Sony Online Entertainment Serious About Banning Planetside 2 Hackers
Posted on December 5, 2012 AT 01:41pm
Planetside 2 developer Sony Online Entertainment is series about making sure that hackers and cheaters don’t ruin the game for everyone—nowhere more evident than in the comments of John Smedley, president of SOE.
A few days ago, Smedley posted the following to Twitter:
“those of you using aimbots are being hunted down and banned. Remember to use /report. People are being banned left and right. we have guys who’s purpose in life is to ban the bad guys and dumbasses that use hacking tools.”
Shortly after, he called out one person that had been banned by name:
“Haruhi at http://artificialaiming.com was just banned. all 3 of his accounts. Goodbye you scumbag. Find a new hobby or get good at the game.”
When asked by another member of Twitter if Smeldey had “hacker hate”, he said that he didn’t—just that he doesn’t like cheaters.
Earlier today, Smedley decided to be a bit clearer on his—and Sony Online Entertainment’s—thoughts on the matter, since it seems a few people thought he was being a bit harsh:
“I want to make some very clear statements about hacking in Planetside 2. We are aggressively banning people. We play the game – we see the people using aim bots. We are banning them. We see people attempting other stuff. We are banning them. As they develop hacks we will break the hacks. We have time and great people. Trust that this is a top priority. Hackers will not win.”
To Smedley I say: don’t back down! People who try to break online multiplayer games so that they can get an unfair advantage are scumbags. Want to do that to the single-player portions of your games? Knock yourself out. The moment it switches to an environment where you’ve got competition with others, there’s no excuse for trying any of that nonsense.
The only people who rely on hacks, cheats, or other such exploits are people who suck at games. If you didn’t suck, you wouldn’t need aimbots or whatever else you’re looking to employ. You don’t have the skill to keep up against those who have actual talent at the game, so you have to cheat—any any victories you get while doing so just make you look even more pathetic.
