A patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment, for technology that interupts gameplay to display an advertisement, has been discovered.

The patent – filed July last year – explains that a warning message would be displayed to the player before suspending gameplay to play an ad. The tech would then rewind a portion of the game to the point you were at before continuing. An example ad in the patent reads: “Best Brand Soda! You’ve got to try it!”

It’s been suggested that this system could be used to fund the growing number of free-to-play games on PlayStation 3, such as Killzone 3’s multiplayer, DC Universe Online and the soon to be released Dust 514. The only way for this to work in a multiplayer game would be to display the ad to everyone at the same time. Imagine going in for a kill and then seeing an ad pop-up, making you lose all concentration.

In our opinion this system will never work, the anger from fans would be insane. Just look how mad players got over ads appearing on the Xbox 360 dashboard. Interrupting gameplay could easily end up being the straw that broke the camel’s back. We sincerely hope that this stays as a patent and never becomes a reality.

Would you be happy with adverts interrupting gameplay? Is this taking things too far? Share your thoughts below.
