Sony President Says It’s Too Early To Talk About The End of the Current Generation of Consoles

Are you ready and waiting to buy a shiny new Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4? Not so fast says Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
In an interview with French publication Le Monde, Yoshida gave a few thoughts when asked if the Wii U was the start of a “new cycle” for consoles (below text translated from French):
“Not necessarily. Since the launch of the Playstation 3, six years ago, graphics have evolved, resulting in titles like Uncharted 3 and Beyond: Two Souls by Quantic Dream. The life of the current consoles is also extended by online services, which continue to offer new features such as cloud and social functions. It is therefore too early to talk about the end of this generation of consoles.”
Of course, when you’ve got store shelves stocked with PlayStation 3 consoles that you want to sell this holiday season, saying “the PS3 is dead, get ready for the PS4″ probably wouldn’t be the best marketing strategy.
On the other hand—seriously, if we don’t have new PlayStation and Xbox consoles by this point next year, I’m going to throw a fit. A few years ago, I was totally on board with the idea of keeping the current generation of systems around for longer. Now, I just want new hardware to hurry up and get here—and really, really hope Sony and Microsoft aren’t expecting us to wait for them until 2014.
