Limited software and a high price tag for the PlayStation Vita have many consumers waiting on a price cut, buy Sony isn’t pulling the trigger just yet. Now that the holiday season is almost here, Sony is instead putting more focus on bundles.
Sony’s current media rounds have been circulating around the failing PS Vita, and in a chat with Eurogamer, PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara talked about trimming the cost of the PS Vita:
“We always aim to establish price cuts. So the question is not so much if, but when. We won’t have an across the board price down this Christmas. But what you will see us doing is work very hard with our retail partners to add value to the product to make it more compelling.”
“Even this week there are some tremendously attractive bundles out there, for example [Wi-Fi] Vita plus LittleBigPlanet at the £200 price point. There’s the [Wi-Fi] product again plus FIFA 13 plus Uncharted Golden Abyss plus LittleBigPlanet at not much above the £200 price point. We will be working that very hard over the coming weeks as more and more software arrives.”
When pressed on the matter, Gera said that a price cut next year would be more likely, and was being discussed internally by Sony.
Perhaps anticipating a last-ditch effort to sell the PS Vita at its $250-$300 price range (plus all the added accessory and memory costs), Sony has attempted to sweeten the pot with more “Cross Play” PS3 offers, PS3 Trophy support, and PSone Classics—although the execution of the latter has been uneven by region, upsetting many gamers.
