Sony says that adding 3D support to PS3 games is ridiculously cheap

Posted on August 4, 2011 AT 01:58pm

Sony Computer Entertainment senior development manager Simon Benson told GamesIndustry.biz that the cost of adding 3D support to PlayStation 3 games is utterly minimal.

He said that, in some cases, adding that support has cost only 0.5% of the overhead for the game.

“It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it,” Benson told GamesIndustry.biz. “Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and reauthor it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it’s the case of it doesn’t even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn’t, it can just be done.”

Benson said that many people assume that the cost of adding 3D to games is high, due to it being a high cost for other entertainment such as film or TV programs. That, however, is not the case, and the decision typically comes down not to a question of cost, but if it makes sense for the game or not.

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD! – Since the cost to add 3D support is so minimal, should more games support it?
