Sony updates PlayStation App to 1.70, brings better iPad support, profile pics, notifications

Posted on April 29, 2014 AT 02:35pm

Ahead of the impending update to firmare 1.70 for the PlayStation 4 later tonight, Sony today released a new version of their PlayStation App that contains a few nice features.

For those who have never used it, the PlayStation App is an app for mobile devices that lets you interact with your PS4, use the device for “second screen” experiences, connect with and message friends, view Trophy lists, watch Live from PlayStation content, and more.

With today’s 1.70.13 update, here’s what’s been changed:

  • Notification alerts are now supported.
  • Thumbnails are now displayed for screenshots and video clips that are posted to Twitter or Facebook® as activities. (To use this feature, you must have a Twitter or Facebook account.)
  • Resolutions for iPad 2 and iPad mini are now supported.
  • Pictures you take on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch can now be set as your profile picture.
  • You can now send a PSN℠ Friend request to your friend using email or text.
  • Stability during use of some features has been improved.

So, yes, good news for iPad owners, as the app is now a native iPad app (versus a scaled iPhone app).

Another welcome addition is the ability to set yor profile picture. Now, this isn’t your avatar per say—it’s the image that people see when you share your real names with one another. Previously, the only way to set a custom image for this was to connect to a Facebook account; now, you can use any image off of your mobile device, cropping and sizing them to your liking. And, of course, notifications will be nice for those who do a lot of communicating with friends (or rivals) over PSN.

PlayStation App 1.70.13 is now available from Apple’s iTunes Store. An updated version of the Android app is expected soon.
