Before Respawn’s mech FPS Titanfall was an Xbox One exclusive, Sony offered to help make a PlayStation Vita version of the game.
According to Geoff Keighley’s Final Hours of Titanfall app, Respawn approached Sony to see if they would offer up the PlayStation 4′s specs in the hopes of bringing the game to that system. Instead, the hardware manufacture said they weren’t ready to discuss those numbers and tried to push Respawn towards their handheld instead.
Curiously, Sony’s reticence seems to have played a major role in the game’s eventual exclusivity. Microsoft was apparently willing to invest in making sure that Titanfall was a timed exclusive, but Keighley writes that the lack of early info on the PS4—coupled with the small size of the team at Respawn—were what made Xbox One exclusivity “a virtual certainty” during the game’s development.
The app also includes other bits of interesting info, too, like the fact that the game was originally prototyped in the Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time engine, that players originally started every match in Titans, and that the infamous Call of Duty lawsuit between Respawn founders Vince Zampella and Jason West and their former employer Activision had some serious, negative repercussions on team morale.There are even some videos of the game’s pre-alpha incarnation, including a look a the prototyped single-player campaign.
But hey, Keighley’s only charging two bucks for the app, and everyone pilfering info from a paid source to generate headlines is a bit skeezy—me definitely included.
