Soulcalibur

Bandai Namco has revealed two more characters coming to Soulcalibur VI, and they include one of the series’ most recognizable, um, faces.

The sword-whip-wielding and stringy-bodice-wearing Ivy Valentine is returning to Soulcalibur VI, in her usual scantily clad form. Ivy has appeared in every iteration of Soulcalibur thus far, so it’s not super surprising to see her inclusion in the upcoming entry, though it is suprising to see how lithe she still is in those heels after all these years.

Accompanying Ivy is Zasalamel, still favoring his scythe and his mystical abilities. The last time we saw Zasalamel was Soulcalibur IV, but this version of the character more closely resembles his Soulcalibur III iteration.

If you’re keeping count, that’s eight total characters revealed so far—in addition to Ivy and Zasalamel, we’ve seen trailers for Nightmare, Xianghua, Kilik, Sophitia, Mitsurugi, and Grøh, with Grøh being the only new character so far in the series. Sophitia and Mitsurugi were seen in the game’s official reveal trailer, while Nightmare, Xianghua, Kilik, and Grøh were more recent additions.

Soulcalibur VI seems like something of a soft reboot for the series. Bandai Namco has revealed that the upcoming entry will “revisit the events of the original Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths.” With the inclusion of Zasalamel, who didn’t enter the original narrative until Soulcalibur III, it’s now clear that the storyline could end up changing a fair amount from the established canon. More importantly, it’s now clear that the roster is free to include characters who didn’t appear in the first Soulcalibur.

Soulcalibur VI is scheduled to launch for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC sometime in 2018, but with eight characters already unveiled, it’s possible we could be getting a solid release date very soon.
