Following the game’s announcement at Paris Games Week 2017, developer Mossmouth Games has debuted its first gameplay trailer for Spelunky 2, and the sequel’s looking to take the first game’s formula and add a few interesting twists to the gameplay.
The game starts with the new main protagonist, Ana Spelunky, daughter of the yellow-hatted adventure from the original, landing on what looks like a distant planet or a moon. Don’t worry, though, because as the Spelunky family is wont to do, Anna finds a mysterious temple located there.
From there, the gameplay trailer kicks off in full steam, showing off new mechanics like riding mounts (which conveniently will take fall damage instead of you, it seems) and a sci-fi pistol that spawns… cats. We have no idea how this weapon will actually work when it comes to the gameplay, but it is adorable, so there’s that. There’s also new liquid physics for things like water and lava. Instead of immediately dispersing once you blow the bottom out of a pool of water, for example, the liquid will actually maintain its physical properties, potentially opening up new avenues for platforming and exploration.
Best of all, Spelunky 2 will include online multiplayer. It’s unclear if you’ll be able to split up or if you’ll have to stay on the same screen like you do with Spelunky‘s couch co-op, but it’s a nice addition and something that would have been much appreciated in the first game.
Besides the newness, Spelunky 2 looks like a true-to-form sequel for fans of the first game, bringing back idol stealing, random level generation, timed ghosts, dog rescuing, and the maniac shopkeeper who will gun you down at even the faintest whiff of provocation.
Oh, and we finally have a release window: 2019 on PlayStation 4 and Steam. Though Mossmouth hinted that the game would come to other platforms when it announced Spelunky 2, nothing was mentioned in the most recent trailer.
