Marvel’s Spider-Man‘s gameplay is centered around two things: web swinging and combat. Considering we got the web swinging checked off, it’s now time for developer Insomniac Games to break down how Spider-Man will break limbs.
Continuing Game Informer‘s month of Spider-Man coverage, creative director Bryan Intihar took part in a video elaborating on the nuances and options of Spider-Man’s combative arsenal. Melee attacks are the foundation of his offensive move set, but while they are quick and powerful, they are mainly there to connect the web crawler’s more impressive abilities.
In between knocking enemies around with his fists, Spider-Man can use a handful of special maneuvers for disabling his foes. He can do the classic tying them up, but he can also whip a bad guy around his head like a hammer throw, use a web to slam a suspended enemy into the ground, and use many other spectacularly animated takedowns. The environment can be worked into the hero’s fighting style, with plenty of scaffolding to topple and objects to throw, and if players want to thin the enemy herd before diving in, many combat scenarios offer the option of stealth.
Intihar also touches on the various gadgets Spider-Man has at his command. Pulled out of a gadget wheel menu, these high-tech tools give Spider-Man advantages beyond his normal web-shooting acrobatics, and several of the game’s gadgets were detailed in earlier coverage. Fully coming to terms with the game’s combat system is important, as many missions will feature unique combat side objectives that reward additional upgrade currency if completed.
