The year 2018 is shaping up to be an exciting one for gamers, with several high-profile series getting new entries. Amongst the anticipated games are two action-adventure experiences: Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts III and Insomniac’s Spider-Man. While they’re set in different universes, the latter’s creative director hopes the two can cross over someday.
During Game Informer‘s rapid-fire Q&A session with Spider-Man creative director Bryan Intihar, the outlet asked if the game’s iconic hero would be appearing in Kingdom Hearts. “That’s, like, my dream. That would be awesome,” said Intihar. “They’ve got to start putting the Marvel worlds in there, right?”
While Intihar’s responses were meant to be short and concise, he had a little more to say about a possible inclusion of the Marvel character in the Square Enix series. “They’ve added the Pixar stuff, right? So, we need Star Wars. We need Marvel,” he said. “That would be awesome to have Sora dressed like Spider-Man.”
While including Marvel and Star Wars characters in the Kingdom Hearts series isn’t a new idea, it’s intriguing to know developers outside of the Square Enix bubble would be interested in bringing their iconic characters to the role-playing franchise. Of course, with Disney’s ownership of both Marvel and Star Wars, it’s certainly plausible we’d see those universes appear in a game down the line.
As for if the web-slinger or other Marvel heroes will appear in the next game, Kingdom Hearts III, that seems pretty unlikely at this point. While the upcoming game still has many more worlds to reveal, there haven’t been any hints about worlds outside of the Disney or Pixar options. In fact, recent leaks suggest players could see worlds themed after The Jungle Book and Frozen included.
Outside of its fast-paced interview, Game Informer also revealed several details about the upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive Spider-Man. Intihar stated the open-world environment will be much larger than Insomniac’s previous game, Sunset Overdrive, and include a subway system for travel. Also, the game will not use microtransactions for any of its unlockables. Three editions are coming, with a launch date of September 7th.
