Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Marvel Games assembled to finally unveil Marvel’s Avengers with a first cinematic trailer and a release date.
The basic gist is that something bad called A-Day happens, the Avengers split up, and then they get back together. In practical terms, Marvel’s Avengers will be a four-player, cooperative multiplayer, live service game where new heroes and new enemies are regularly introduced.
Besides the initial roster of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow, additional characters like Ant-Man were also teased for future releases. Crystal Dynamics representatives promised that every new hero that launches will be free and that the game won’t have loot boxes or “pay-to-win” mechanics, though we’re sure there will be cosmetic microtransactions for each hero.
Marvel’s Avengers is launching for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on May 15th, 2020. The PlayStation 4 version will get exclusive content, as well as early access to the beta, though the rest of that content wasn’t described during Square Enix’s press conference.
