Square Enix Hints At Final Fantasy XIII-3, Will Be Revealed This September

Posted on August 22, 2012 AT 11:38am

Square Enix will be revealing the next chapter of Final Fantasy XIII heroine Lightning’s story later this fall, according a new website launched by the developer. It seems like another sequel is in the works, but the reveal is slated for September 1st.

Here’s the text from the website, which highlights a cloudy, thundery sky with “A Storm Is Coming” on the header:

The “Lightning Saga” that started with the release of FINAL FANTASY XIII, has achieved a cumulative shipment of over 9.6 million units; and in May 2012 FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 was brought to conclusion with the add-on content entitled “Lightning’s Story: Requiem of the Goddess”.

Key members of the FINAL FANTASY XIII development team including the Producer, Director and Art Director, are in preparations to present new information about the direction of Lightning’s story. This presentation will take place at an event in Tokyo to celebrate FINAL FANTASY 25th Anniversary, on 1st September 2012.

It’s a bit strange that despite the mixed critical reaction, Square Enix is pushing a franchise out of FFXIII, which is arguably the second-least most successful core installment outside of FFXIV‘s first version.

Then again, the sales numbers don’t lie. Almost 10 million sold copies means that the company is well within their breadth to continue the “Lightning Saga” with more content. If the announcement does reveal a suspected sequel, it’ll also be a landmark.

No other core Final Fantasy title has inspired three direct console editions yet, although a case could be made for the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which inspired games like the awful Dirge of Cerberus and the much-better Crisis Core.
