Square Enix is getting in on the recent surge of monster-battling card game RPGs with a new mobile title called Guardian Cross. Available for both iOS and Android, it’s free-to-play and downloadable right now.
Here’s a brief description of it from the game’s official webpage:
Guardian Cross is a creature-based card game that features a fully unique battle system in which players take on the role of “tamers” who capture, raise, and control powerful beasts known as “Guardians.”In addition to quests to unlock the secret of why the Guardians have woken after a millennium of slumber, other features include a coliseum system that allows players to challenge other tamers from around the world in head-to-head combat.
Whether that’s ripping off Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokémon, or the Magic card game series, Guardian Cross should still do well.
Square Enix isn’t the only company getting in on digital card games either, as Marvel, Hasbro, and Mobage have all been pushing their own card games in the App Store and Google Play. It’s too bad that Nintendo and Apple don’t play nice with each other, because a Pokémon Trading Card Game app would be baller.
Interestingly enough, this offering from Square Enix features artwork and development polish from several Final Fantasy staff members, such as Hiroyuki Ito (the creator of the active time battle system) and Naoshi Mizuta (composer for FFX-2 and FFXI). Not too shabby for a mobile game.
