While Final Fantasy VII may continue to be the fan favorite in the long running RPG franchise, it’s far from the most profitable?that honor belongs to Final Fantasy XI. What a shocker, right?
During the 10th anniversary Vana‘dielFestival 2012 in Pacifico Yokohama, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada touted that FFXI players have sunk a collective 200,000 years into the company’s first MMO offering, according to Famitsu and Andriasang. Considering that all adds up with paid subscriptions and Xbox Live Gold Accounts, that’s a pretty large chunk of digital change.
In fact, since the FFXI community is still going strong?it’s not like they’re playing FFXIV, after all?Square Enix is releasing a new expansion for the 10-year old game, Seekers of Adoulin.
In terms of raw sales in the entire Final Fantasy series so far, FFXI actually falls in as the 26th-highest selling game yet. For the game to still be such a huge profits magnet for Square Enix, you can bet that the surging (and financially attractive) MMO model is something that the Japanese publisher will revisit again and again as time goes on.
