Square Enix is getting in on the April Fools’ Day action by revealing a new system for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn that allows players to form relationships with NPCs.
According to the publisher, the “Favour” system will allow players to form relationships with several male and female NPCs in the game world by giving them gifts and performing tasks for them—just like a dating sim.
“This new system will allow adventurers to grow even closer to their favorite NPCs. Have you held out hope that one day Minfilia will look your way for longer than a cutscene? Or perhaps you offer gifts to Merlwyb to try and win her over? Well, that’s what the Favour system is for!
“Who are you looking forward to raising favour with in this new system? While we showcased female NPCs in today’s update, rest assured that male NPCs will be debuting in the system at the same time!”
NPCs will react positively to certain race, hair, and outfit choices—to increase the demand for Fantastia potions—and each will have two phases to work through. One example given was for Minfilia, whose initial phase is “The Spoilt Maiden” where you can’t refuse any of her requests, while her second phase is “The Clingy Maiden” where she will call you constantly and ban you from forming parties with other female characters.
Of course this is just a clever little April Fools’ joke from Square Enix, so everything above is complete rubbish, but it’s a fun—albeit creepy—idea.
To add to the fun, Square Enix also turned every user on the Final Fantasy XIV forum into game director and producer Naoki Yoshida, complete with new avatar to match.
