SSX Doesn’t Require An Online Pass For Multiplayer

THE BUZZ: An EA Sports spokesperson has revealed that an online pass will not be needed to access SSX’s multiplayer, but one will be included with new copies of the game.

Players will be able to compete in online events without an online pass, however they will unable to collect the credits earned from these events unless they either put a pass code in or purchase one. The credits can be used to purchase new gear and buy access to new events, however the spokesperson added that due to economy balance, players can purchase access to all multiplayer events using single player earned credits. The statement reads:

In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX’s online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions. In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an Online Pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them.

Economy balance makes it possible to unlock all available content and allows you to participate in all event drops across both Explore and Global Events, with credits earned solely in Explore.

EGM’s TAKE: This is a smart move by EA, and serves as a good example to how the pass system should be implemented. Instead of locking players out of multiplayer completely it gives them a chance to play all of the game they paid for, however to reap the rewards they will need a pass. So those who purchase used copies and want to enjoy the extra credit boost from multiplayer can purchase a pass to do so. More developers should try this approach to online passes and then maybe the community may be a little more accepting of them. The major quarrel with the system at the moment is that it locks you out of content that you’ve paid for. Some kind of system needs to be i place to allow developers and publishers to benefit from used sales, maybe the pass system is the answer and maybe it’s not, but until something better comes along it’s all developers have.

Is this system better or worse than other games? Leave your thoughts below.
