A Star Fox racing spin-off might be in the works, if the latest rumors surrounding Nintendo’s Retro Studios are true.
Retro Studios, the Texas-based developer that worked on the Metroid Prime trilogy and the Donkey Kong games on the Wii and Wii U, may be creating a reimagining of the Star Fox games for Nintendo’s more recent consoles.
Word first began to spread when leaker DasVergeben posted on Reddit, describing a game called “Star Fox Grand Prix” that plays “like Diddy Kong Racing mixed with F-Zero,” plus an “adventure mode,” “hub world,” and “boss fights.” While DasVergeben’s record for accurate leaks is mixed, other sources came out in support soon afterwards. A logo for “Star Fox Grand Prix” appeared on 4chan shortly after the Reddit post.
Even taken together, those two sources are still sketchy. However, Eurogamer reports that—while the outlet can’t confirm the title of the game—the rumors actually line up with what Eurogamer reporters have learned from inside sources. Kotaku added that it had heard similar news from both Nintendo and two additional sources.
At the moment, Nintendo has not released any official statements on the status of the Star Fox series. With E3 2018 right around the corner, it’s possible that we’ll hear more news of this game when the conference kicks off in June.
