THE BUZZ: Massively Multiplayer Online games cost a lot of money to make, and no one knows that more than EA right now. The LA Times reports that EA spent an estimated $200 million on the production of Star Wars: The Old Republic. With a team of about 800 employees spread across four continents, the game took six years to finally release.

The LA Times threw out other numbers as well: Nearly 1000 actors recording dialog for 4,000 characters in three separate languages; add that to the 1,600 hours of story, with hundreds more still in production and it is easy to see why EA is calling this, “largest entertainment production in history.” With such lofty numbers, it will be a long time before EA can recoup its investment.

EGM’s TAKE: Do you know what we could do with $200 million dollars?! Who are we kidding, we’d probably created an MMORPG based off the world’s most propular license and do so by hiring one of the most renown developers in the world. Creating an MMORPG is unlike creating a game in any other genre. There is a constant stream of support that needs to be in place, and with such a massive undertaking, EA looks like they are preparing for the long haul.
