Steam Family Sharing Brings Digital Loaning to Valve’s Steam Service

Valve will be adding a new service called Steam Family Sharing, which allows Steam users to share digital titles with friends and family, to their digital distribution platform, the company announced today.

“Our customers have expressed a desire to share their digital games among friends and family members, just as current retail games, books, DVDs, and other physical media can be shared,” said Valve’s Anna Sweet. “Family Sharing was created in direct response to these user requests.”

Through Steam Family Sharing, users can give access to their entire Steam library to up to 10 different computers. Not every game will be supported, however, and regional restrictions still apply (translation: North American versions of a game can’t be shared with someone from, say, Europe). The shared library can only be accessed by one user at a time. The owner is prioritized, so anyone accessing the library when the user logs onto their library will be given a prompt allowing them to purchase the game themselves or choose to quit out.

Steam Family Sharing goes into beta next week. Parties interested in participating can join the Family Sharing group and express their desire to join.
