Super Mario Odyssey has now been out for one week, and what a week it’s been.
According to Nintendo’s sales figures, Mario’s latest adventure has been the fastest-selling Mario game ever in the United States, passing the old record-holder New Super Mario Bros. with 1.1 million sales in just five days.
Worldwide sales are developing even more quickly, with Super Mario Odyssey breaking the 2 million sales mark worldwide only three days after launch.
The game has also met with an exceptionally good critical reception. Currently, it’s the highest rated game of all time on OpenCritic and holds a prestigious score of 97 on MetaCritic (with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as the only other recent competitor). EGM’s own review of the game can be found here.
“The public continues to respond positively to Mario’s latest adventure,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé reported (via Business Wire). “We’re also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers.”
Nintendo is increasing production of the Nintendo Switch in order to meet holiday demand. It’s likely that sales of Super Mario Odyssey will only be further boosted with the holiday rush, so we’ll be sure to keep tracking the sales progress of the game.
