Mario Party

Nintendo revealed that Super Mario Party is heading to the Nintendo Switch at this year’s E3, and now we’re slowly getting more details about the game, including the fact that it can be played online.

As Nintendo Treehouse revealed during their live show, Super Mario Party will have its own unique online play mode, Online Mario-thon. This online mode will feature five different, random, minigames at a time, and players can challenge either other friends online or random other players around the world. This is the first time a Mario Party game can be played online in this way.

For those who are determined to crush their relationships with family and friends in casual matchups, Online Mario-thon will feature online leaderboards, letting players prove their skills at the minigames and truly become the best. Competing and placing high on the leaderboards will earn players some kind of reward, though Nintendo hasn’t elaborated on what the reward will be.

If you don’t want to play online, Super Mario Party also supports local play with other players who are physically nearby with their own consoles, as well as up to four-player support for a single console. Players can join in with just a single Joy-Con, so anyone with a Switch will be able to play with at least one friend.

Super Mario Party is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch. It releases on October 5th.
