Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS will let players disrupt edge-hogging

Posted on January 22, 2014 AT 11:37am

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS won’t allow players to camp out on edges to block recovering opponents, director Masahiro Sakurai revealed today in a post on Miiverse.

The act, called “edge-hogging” in the Smash Bros. community, is regarded as cheap by casual players but has been embraced by pro-level players. Guarding the ledge after knocking a player out of the arena space ensures they won’t recover and instead KOs. According to Sakurai, the above photo depicts Link disrupting Mario’s ledge grab.

Sakurai also mentioned other changes in store for the new Smash Bros. in a follow-up comment, saying that air time and accumulated damage will factor into how long a player is invincible while on an edge and that grab controls will no longer be affected by damage percentage.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS are set to launch later this year.
