Super Smash Bros

Ever since Nintendo announced that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be receiving five additional fighters through DLC, fans have been clamoring to find out who will be joining the fight. A recent rumor suggested a famous Square Enix character will be in the mix, and while that’s still unconfirmed, a new leak makes the possibility more plausible.

According to data miner jam1garner (via ResetEra), three codenames were recently discovered within Ultimate‘s game data. The codes include “fighter_kind_jack,” “fighter_kind_brave,” and “fighter_kind_packu.” As the ResetEra thread points out, Packu likely represents Piranha Plant, who will be joining the roster in February, while Jack, as in Atlus’ Jack Frost mascot, refers to previously revealed Persona 5 fighter Joker.

As for the third—Brave—fans have theorized that this code refers to the previously rumored Dragon Quest III hero Erdrick. As seen below, players came to this conclusion by translating Erdrick’s Japanese Dragon Quest classification of “Yusha” into “Brave.”

Linking the code to a translation doesn’t outright confirm that Erdrick will be the second character available in Ultimate‘s Fighter Pass, but it does add more weight to the previous rumor. Plus, Square Enix announced this week that Dragon Quest XI S would be coming to Switch in Japan later this year, which would be a great marketing tie-in with Erdrick’s possible arrival in Ultimate.

It will likely be a while before fans get official confirmation from Nintendo or Square Enix, but there’s a chance that more Ultimate news is just on the horizon. A recent rumor suggests that a Nintendo Direct will take place on January 10th, which could be the venue where we hear more about several upcoming Switch titles or Ultimate‘s supposed Mii Fighter DLC.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for Nintendo Switch.
