Ever had trouble making a choice in one of Telltale’s graphic adventure games? Now, your friends, family, and viewers can help make decisions for you.
The new feature, called Crowd Play, was revealed at San Diego Comic Con, though it hasn’t yet been formally announced.
“We wanted a better way to integrate that audience [of viewers as opposed to players],” said Job Stauffer, Telltale’s head of creative communications (via Shacknews). “Now, from two to 2,000-plus people can help the player make decisions.”
From here on out, starting with Batman: The Telltale Series, players will be able to choose to enable Crowd Play at the start of a new game. If they say yes, they’ll get a unique URL. Other viewers can then go to that URL on different devices in order to share their thoughts on which dialogue option to pick, which will appear as percentages on the player’s screen.
There are two different modes within Crowd Play. In one, the crowd’s opinion remains just that—an opinion, visible to the player as a percentage, but with the final choice still in the player’s hands (though those watching can add in a thumbs up or thumbs down to express their opinion of the final choice). In the other, the most popular crowd opinion will win by default, a good choice for a group trying to play communally without any one person in charge.
Additionally, these Crowd Play statistics will show up for all players at the end of the game, on the screen where players are usually able to see how their decisions stacked up with those of other players.
The new feature could make Telltale games much more popular among streamers, since the interactive nature of the game encourages audience participation. It can also be used in large group settings, as Telltale demonstrated at Comic Con (via Shacknews).
The first episode Telltale’s next game, Batman: The Telltale Series, releases on August 2nd for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
