Texas University Offers Class On Skyrim Lore, Norse Culture

Student at Rice University have an interesting way to earn credit at their Houston, Texas campus, as the institution is offering a class about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Homework must be quite entertaining.

According to the Bethesda Blog, the college’s ”Scandanavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim” class is both a course in fantasy psychology, and how it affects gaming culture.

Here’s a snippet from the official course description, which sounds like a great way to spend a Wednesday morning:

To these ends, students will read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim. While the course begins by identifying moments of intersection between the worlds of the sagas and of Skyrim (inclement environments, supernatural figures, mythologies), the course is not in any means meant to map the former onto the latter.

See, it’s even got something for history buffs. Why can’t more colleges use video games as learning tools?

Take heed if you attend the university, as the course is only being offered just once this coming fall semester. Hopefully, you’re an English major, because there’s probably going to be a priority wait list to get in the class.
