THE BUZZ: Frank O’Connor, Development Director for the Halo franchise, has let slip some new information on how Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will take advantage of Kinect functionality.
O’Connor revealed that voice commands will be used to switch between the “classic” and “remastered” versions of maps by simply saying those two words. He also teased that Kinect would be used in other ways, but promised to stay mum on the details until at least October. It was mentioned that none of those enhancements would radically change the overall gameplay.
“We accidentally revealed some of it because someone kept saying one of the keywords during another demonstration. So there will be some basic voice support — for example you can switch between the two graphics modes with voice commands by saying ‘Classic’ or ‘Remastered.’ There is some other functionality that we haven’t talked about that is not core to the gameplay per se, but it is germane to the story and fiction fans will probably really enjoy that feature — and it’s a little bit more advanced than just voice functionality. We’ll talk about it later, sometime in October probably, but we don’t want to oversell it. It’s not something that radically changes the gameplay; it’s just another additive bonus on top of the other stuff we’ve added. We think of it like the 3D: something that makes the experience better, but doesn’t change it.” O’Connor told 1up.
EGM’s TAKE: While we are pleased to see Microsoft and 343 finding new ways to integrate Kinect into “hardcore” titles it’s also good to hear that it won’t jeopardize what we like about the original.
