Since 1996, the Japan Game Awards has been highlighting the best and brightest in the Japanese side of the industry. Alongside the wrap-up for the Tokyo Game Show, Gravity Rush has won big.
SCE Japan Studio’s innovative and unique PS Vita title (better known as Gravity Daze in the Japanese region) has been given the “Games of the Year Division Award” over some tough competition, including strong Nintendo franchises.
Here’s a look at the full list of entrants from this year, plus the award winners in every category:
Grand Award — Gravity Daze
Game Designers Award — Journey
Award for Excellence
- Gravity Daze
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Kid Icarus: Uprising
- Super Mario 3D Land
- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
- Dark Souls
- Final Fantasy XIII-2
- Mario Kart 7
- Monster Hunter 3 tri-G
- One Piece: Pirate Warriors
Special Award — Mushroom Garden
Best Sales Award — Mario Kart 7
Global Award Japanese Product — Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version
Global Award Foreign Product — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Notably, Nintendo made up the biggest portion of this year’s entrants with five different games (counting both Pokémon titles as one), despite not being a participant of the Tokyo Game Show.
Additionally, Nintendo also went home with a “Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award” win for the development of the Nintendo 3DS handheld system. Not too shabby for a device everyone called an early failure.
