Talking to Eurogamer, versatile video game voice actor Nolan North discussed how putting a little of himself into every role made him become “a better actor.”

“I became a better actor—on camera, voice-over-wise [and] everything—when I stopped trying to play a character and played me as that character,” North told Eurogamer.

According to North, he started applying this mentality to his roles in response to a failed audition, after which a friend recommended that he start infusing his roles with more Nolan North instead of trying to adopt the character as an entirely new persona.

North applied this tactic to Nathan Drake as well—a role that has arguably defined his omnipresent video game voice acting career.

“There is an amazing distinction when you realize that nobody else can play something the way you are, and you would be,” said North. “I learned this before I started doing Nathan Drake and that’s why this is so rewarding to me. That character is me. That’s how in real-life—if Nolan North were this guy who’s a treasure hunter with all these circumstances in my life—these things would naturally come out because I’m putting myself in that situation.”

So in short: Nathan Drake, Nolan North—what’s the diff?
