Journey, Flower Devs Now Independent, Next Title Won’t Be PS3 Exclusive

Jenova Chen and thatgamecompany are finally masters of their own destiny, as the developers of  Journey, Flower, and Flow have raised enough funding to take their next game multi-platform. That’s (potentially) good news for all of you Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and mobile fans out there who don’t own a PlayStation 3.

That financial backing comes from a private investor named Mitch Lasky, representing the venture capital firm Benchmark Capital. Previously, Lasky’s company has provided money for numerous start-ups, and is the go-to place for investment money.

As a result, thatgamecompany joins Twitter, Zipcar, Instagram, Yelp, and eBay on the long list of studios and groups that have been funded by Benchmark. For his part, Jenova Chen sounds extremely excited about the new opportunity:

We are extremely grateful to Sony and the many players who put their faith in us. Their support has turned Journey into the fastest selling title in PSN history.

Many of you have asked what’s coming up next for TGC and whether our games can be played on other platforms. I have good news for you.

Today I am pleased to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently. This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact.

What remains to be seen is whether thatgamecompany’s previous three titles will eventually be available outside of the PlayStation network. My impression is that Sony will want to hang on to those IP rights, but since the games aren’t exactly new, the cash-strapped electronics giant could definitely be persuaded to let the franchises go for the right price.
