The Empire Strikes Back: Sony Will Shut Down Star Wars Galaxies

Posted on June 24, 2011 AT 02:25pm

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, Sony Online Entertainment launched their Star Wars-based MMORPG, Star Wars Galaxies.

Today, they’ve announced that the game will officially come to an end on December 15th of this year. All services will be shut down for SWG, meaning that both the MMO itself and the Trading Card Game will be no more.

SOE, in their release today, said, “We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we’ve received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.”

They also said that the game will “go out with a bang”, as a galaxy-ending in-game event will hit during the last week of the game.
