Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami and the developers at Tango Gameworks sat down with IGN to talk about their upcoming survival horror revival, The Evil Within.

“For me, personally, why I came back to survival horror is that survival horror as a genre is becoming all action now,” Mikami tells IGN. “There aren’t any real survivor horror games in the world right now. That is the biggest motivation for me.”

Mikami also shared some story details with IGN. The Evil Within revolves around three detectives investigating a mass murder at an asylum. As part of his push to move survival horror back out of the “action” umbrella, Mikami is restricting weaponry to basic choices, like knives and small arms—handguns.

“There are a lot of survival horror games nowadays, but the thing that I want to focus on is having the perfect balance between horror and action,” says Mikami.

Check out IGN’s full video interview below. While there’s no in-game goodness to ogle at, there are a few new pieces of concept art.

The Evil Within, which is being published by Bethesda, is scheduled for release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 sometime 2014.
