Developer Hinterland Studio has released the first prototype gameplay footage of their “thoughtful, exploration-focused survival simulation” The Long Dark.

The Long Dark tells the story of pilot William Mackenzie, whose plane loses power over the Northern wilderness from what appears to be a strange magnetic occurrence. Stranded and far removed from any pockets of population, players must guide William to safety and survive the harsh wilderness by relying on their wits.

To this end, gameplay revolves around maintaining and keeping a close eye on Mackenzie’s calorie store by eating, drinking, resting, staying worm, and watching how much they physically exert themselves (more vigorous activities burn more calories). William also must fend against wild animals and, of course, nature itself. How this shakes out in gameplay can be seen in the prototype footage embedded below.

According to creative director Raphael van Lierop, formerly of Relic Entertainment and Ubisoft Montreal, The Long Dark‘s story will unfold in a TV-like model reminiscent of British television structure, with fewer episodes that are individually longer.

Hinterland Studio, an independent development house formed of former Relic Entertainment, Ubisoft, Volition, Riot Games, and BioWare developers who have worked on Saints Row IV, Red Faction, God of War, League of Legends, and Far Cry 3 among several other notable titles, is currently $80,000 shy of their $200,000 funding goal on Kickstarter, with 8 days left in their funding period.
