Call of Duty

With a Call of Duty game dropping every year and Rockstar taking the better part of a decade to release a new Red Dead Redemption, it seemed like a safe bet which big game this month fans are most excited for, which is why this recent survey is so surprising.

The Nielsen Group recently constructed a survey to determine the most highly anticipated games coming out this holiday season. Despite the massive hype that seems to be surrounding the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 this year, the survey found that gamers are actually looking forward to Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 slightly more than RDR2.

The survey designates each major release a number out of 100, based on consumer anticipation for it. Black Ops 4 leads the Multiplatform category with a rank of 99, while Red Dead Redemption 2 trails closely behind with 97 in the same category. The only game beating out Black Ops 4 is Marvel’s Spider-Man, which stands alone in the PS4-exclusive category with a rank of 100, while both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Party also beat out RDR2. The ranking of the survey’s top five games can be found below.

  1. Marvel’s Spider-Man – 100 (PS4)
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – 99 (Multiplatform)
  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 98 (Switch)
  4. Super Mario Party – 98 (Switch)
  5. Red Dead Redemption 2 – 97 (Multiplatform)

While this ranking may come as a surprise, it actually aligns with sales predictions made by an analyst firm earlier this summer. According to firm Piper Jaffray, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is expected to sell more in the fourth quarter of 2018 than Red Dead Redemption 2.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is dropping October 12th, and Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out October 26th. Both games will launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but only Black Ops 4 is launching on PC.

The most anticipated games of the year may not be what you think

One survey has found the game with the most buzz this year isn't Red Dead Redemption 2 or Black Ops 4.
