The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter is an Animal Crossing star

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has its next new fighter, and it’s one nobody expected: Isabelle from the Animal Crossing games.

All throughout today’s Nintendo Direct, there was no mention of either Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or a new Animal Crossing game. Then, at the very end, Nintendo revealed what seemed to be a teaser for a new Animal Crossing game, only to have Isabelle turn around and join the Smash roster instead.

From the looks of her appearance in the trailer, Isabelle is able to float upwards on balloons, smack enemies with a pail or party poppers, and use a fishing pole to grab onto far away enemies. She can also throw down a stop sign, seemingly to block, and can dig into the ground to launch a rocket upward.

Of course, so as not to make Animal Crossing fans too unhappy, Nintendo then turned around and revealed a brand new Animal Crossing game in the works. We’ll likely see Isabelle and the rest of the town’s citizens again when that game launches in 2019.

Isabelle will appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when the full game releases on December 7th, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
