A Pokémon superfan has created an odd rendition of the cartoon’s intro using Grand Theft Auto V‘s Rockstar Editor.

The creator, YouTuber Merfish, said that his love of both the GTA and Pokémon series have come together to create “something special” with this video.

“Today I turn 23 years old, and for 17 of those years I have devoted my life to Pokémon,” Merfish said. “It’s one of the few video game series that matches GTA in my heart, so surely a combination of the two would be something special, at least for me. So this is my birthday gift to myself that I wish to share with all of you.”

The level of work this must have taken, using custom assets and models, is quite impressive, but it’s still pretty freaky.

If you’re interested in seeing how this nightmare version stacks up against the original, there’s also a video featuring a side-by-side comparison.

You may know Merfish from his previous, decidedly less terrifying work using GTA V to recreating the intros of Full House, Friends, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, among others.
