Davey Wreden has announced that the remake of his classic Half-Life 2 mod The Stanley Parable will be released on Steam next week.
The full game will be available from October 17, and to get you in the mood a free demo for the game will be available on Steam later today. However, unlike most demos, this one has nothing to do with the actual game and is a standalone episode to show you what you should expect from the complete version.
“The Stanley Parable is very much a game about expectations,” Wreden told Polygon. “The content is all hand-crafted to mess with you and your preconceptions in as many ways as possible. So of course, if I were to try to tell you what the game is or what you do in it, it would neuter the experience of actually playing it! So we thought about this and decided that the best way to convey what our game is about is through an additional piece of content, completely separate from the main game, that carries the style and tone of the main game without actually spoiling it.
“So since the main game is about expectations of what a game is, it makes sense that the demo would be about expectations of what a demo is! If we turn the traditional idea of ‘demo’ inside-out, it lets people know that’s what we intend to do with video games in general in the full title: We intend to mess with your expectations but also keep you engaged.”
