The studio behind the Gears of War games is working on a new project, and it seems like it’s not related to Gears of War.
StoryLab Productions is a Vancouver-based production house that works on film projects and games both, and it’s lent its services to the Gears of War franchise before. Now, though, StoryLab’s website mentions that its current project involves working on a “New IP with The Coalition Studios.”
The Coalition is almost synonymous with Gears of War at this point, having taken over development of the series when Microsoft acquired the rights in 2014 and taking its name for its fictional Coalition of Ordered Governments. Before that, though, the studio worked on a few other unrelated games, including Microsoft Flight, back when the studio was known as just Microsoft Game Studios Vancouver, and also worked on a now-cancelled project back when the studio was known as Black Tusk. While the studio’s main efforts will likely continue to be directed towards the Gears of War series, it will be interesting to see what direction this new project will take.
One curious wrinkle in all this is an earlier rumor, purportedly sourced from the Xbox API, that claimed The Coalition was working on a reboot of the Perfect Dark series that would shit from a first-person to third-person perspective. Perfect Dark would not qualify, strictly speaking, as a “new IP,” so perhaps this more official development can be considered to debunk the rumor. Then again, perhaps a different take on Perfect Dark, still shrouded in secrecy, would be enough to warrant the use of that specific language.
After all, another portion of that same rumor, the claim Fable 4 is currently in development, just got a little easier to believe.
At the moment, neither StoryLab Productions nor The Coalition has released any information on this new game. StoryLab’s website mentions that the project has been in production since 2017, so it’s likely that this new property is still in its infancy.
