THE BUZZ: Does your PS3 feel a little lacking? Does it need some class, some pizazz, some style? Well, you’re in luck, as ‘The Studio’ launches tomorrow on the PS3 in North and South America.
What is The Studio? It’s a collection of dynamic themes created by a wide array of artists and illustrators specifically for Sony’s home gaming console.
To see a sampling of what will be available, check out the preview video and images below. The Studio XMB themes will run $2.99 each, but PS+ subscribers will get a 20% discount on purchases.
EGM’s TAKE: I really like the idea that Sony has put together here, and some of the themes seem cool. However, with these (and other) custom XMB themes, I sometimes wonder if the people making them every tried actually using them on a regular basis. From the video preview, I can already see that some of these are going to make menu items nearly impossible to read.
It’d really be nice if the XMB allowed for some level of editing to help readability when using certain themes—such as, say, switching from white text with a black shadow, to black text with a white shadow, or allowing character outlining for XMB text.
