The War Z has been forced offline after both its forum and game databases were compromised, leading to the loss of player data.
OP Productions issued a security alert earlier today and has contacted all of those affected via email. Data accessed includes email addresses used for the forum, forum passwords, which OP promises were encrypted, email addresses used for game log ins, game passwords, again encrypted, character names, and IP addresses.
Names and addresses were not compromised as OP does not collect them and payment details are safe as they are handled by a third party, so that’s some good news.
OP did warn that while it does encrypt passwords some simple ones may still be broken via a brute force method. “Our research shows that many users are not using strong passwords,” the developer said. Players are advised to change their passwords immediately.
“This has been a humbling experience for us,” OP Productions said. “While we all know that there is no guaranty [sic] of security on the internet, our goal is to try our very best to protect your data. We sincerely apologize.”
