Though hit with delays after its initial unveiling in April 2010, Nippon Ichi’s PS3 action RPG The Witch and the Hundred Knight is finally coming to the West, with an official release date now set for both North America and Europe.

That date? March 25th here in the States, and a few days earlier on March 21st for our European brothers and sisters.

Indeed, it’s been something of a wait for this one. At that initial announcement, it was expected that the game would be finished in about a year and a half’s time, but it wouldn’t be until July of this year that Hundred Knight hit store shelves in Japan. In the process of trying to improve the game during that extended period of development time, some initially planned (or considered) elements—such as potentially giving Hundred Knight a more open-world feel—were changed in order to put focus on those things the team felt more confident in.

Having not had a chance to play the Japanese release yet, I’m really curious to see how The Witch and The Hundred Knight turned out. I’m always interesting in trying out new IP from a developer, and this original franchise has the extra benefit of featuring character designs from Takehito Harada. Harada is the artist responsible for Disgaea‘s character designs, and original creations like Pleinair—and I’ve been a fan of his work for years now.

Here’s a quick introduction to the game, courtesy of NIS America:

Fed up with being unable to travel beyond the borders of her swamp, the witch Metallia forges a contract with the legendary Hundred Knight to help her realize her ambition of spreading her swamp throughout all of Medea. As the Hundred Knight, your mission is to do whatever your master, the Swamp Witch, commands. Explore the world, destroy Pillars built to prevent her swamp from spreading, and wreak indiscriminate havoc. However, in the back of your inhuman mind, you begin to wonder… What prevents Metallia from leaving the swamp? Why do the other witches shun her, and how can she survive in a swamp that is notorious for how poisonous its fumes are? Is Metallia really a witch to respect, or is she one to fear?

NIS America also released a glimpse of the final packaging for The Witch and The Hundred Knight, which will come with packed with a soundtrack CD for its physical release.
