The Witcher 2 Steam Sales Numbers Revealed

THE BUZZ: It’s a rare event to see Steam’s sales figures of any game, but PC Gamer is reporting that Good Old Games’ Managing Director Guillaume Rambourg, in a recent interview told GameIndustry.biz that the Steam platform managed to sell 200,000 copies of The Witcher 2. While its competition, Impulse, Direct2Drive, and Gamersgate only shifted 10,000 units total. GOG themselves were able to move 40,000 copies of the game. Combined, the competition wasn’t able to do half the numbers of Steam.
EGM’s TAKE: So Steam’s digital distribution is popular, who would have thought? While Steam’s success is nothing new, this is one of few times someone actually put a number to that success. That’s an impressive sales numbers alone but the real story here is how Steam trounced competing platforms. We have to imagine with every big release Valve’s digital distribution platform grows stronger and scarier to the competition. Soon there may be a need for Impulse, D2D, GOG, and Gamersgate, to form as a unit like Voltron to take on the Valve behemoth.
