Square Enix is teasing a sequel to The World Ends With You, and it may be heading to smartphones and tablet devices. Recently, the developer/publisher started up a countdown site that’s currently counting down to what’s likely and announcement date.

It’s can be found at the URL “http://www.square-enix.co.jp/subaseka/” which features a skyline design much like that in promo art for TWEWY‘s version of Tokyo’s famous shopping center, Shibuya.

Additionally, a look at the page’s source code references “character design” credits for Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi, who were both the lead artists on The World Ends With You.

If that’s not proof enough for you, the music playing on the site is also from TWEWY soundtrack, and the “subaseka” text in the URL is actually shorthand for the Japanese title of the RPG, Subarashiki Kono Sekai. That pretty much seals any doubts that people might have about the direction of this project.

Whatever this release happens to be will also have some sort of mobile component.

As suggested by the logos at the bottom, this will have some connection with GREE, the rapidly-expanding Japanese mobile games publisher and social network that houses a vast suite of titles including Cereberus Age and Dragon Ark.
