Despite its viability and fan interest in a Thomas Was Alone sequel, creator Mike Bithell intends to focus on creating new experiences rather than retreading successful ones, the developer told Joystiq.
“I’ve got lots of people who would actually now buy that game at launch, and I would make a lot of money. But it’s boring,” Bithell told Joystiq. “And it’s a decision and a promise I made myself. I’m not going to use this opportunity I’ve been given to do that. I don’t think Thomas needs a sequel right now.”
According to Bithell, “every business-minded mate” in his life has recommended making Thomas Was Alone 2, but Bithell’s passion is in his current project: Volume, a top-down stealth game reminiscent of the original Metal Gear Solid in its camera work (and in its VR-esque setting, too). It’s expected to launch on PS4 and Vita later into 2014 than sooner. But Bithell says despite wanting to keep developing original titles, a Thomas Was Alone sequel is far from an impossibility.
“If something comes to me one day I might go back to it,” he told Joystiq. “Or if I make a couple of flops I might go back to that well.”
