Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell has revealed his next project: Volume, a top-down stealth game reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid.

As evident in the announcement trailer (embedded below), Volume is something of an answer to Metal Gear‘s VR missions, featuring top-down 3D stealth. The VR angle allows Bithell to maintain the minimalistic aesthetic he’s partial to and was established in Thomas Was Alone, although Volume‘s 3D nature makes it something of a wild departure for the indie designer.

“I think the act of creating something, at a basic level, is probably the same for everyone. And the whole second album thing is terrifying,” Bithell told Polygon. “I’m scared of being typecast to Thomas, I’m scared that this game moves away too much and will annoy fans of that game. I’m just scared in general, basically.”

Volume will also feature a level editor (also seen in the video) and will be scored by composer David Housden, who did Thomas Was Alone‘s spectacular soundtrack.

More details regarding Volume are expected in October. The game itself is set to launch sometime 2014.
