Red Dead Redemption

In what may be the most convoluted, conspiratorial chapter of the Red Dead Redemption 2 saga yet, code discovered on developer Rockstar Game’s website could add to the likelihood of the Wild West sequel’s impending reveal, as could a new screenshot some are attributing to the still-unannounced game.

A Reddit user by the name of Gaudynights recently took the to the Rockstar Games subreddit with a theory about why the developer’s website was briefly taken down. According to Gaudynights, a self-proclaimed tech company worker, that sort of downtime often suggests a website is being updated. The redditor then proceeded to investigate the site’s game list to see what was different, a process which he details in his original post.

Gaudynights discovered two pages on the Rockstar site that returned error messages different from a standard 404 page, which Gaudynights believes are both somehow related to the Red Dead series due to similarities in how the pages are numbered. In what must be labelled as almost completely baseless speculation, Gaudynights proposes that the extra game page may be for a remastered edition of the first Red Dead Redemption or for a sequestered multiplayer mode in the sequel, which would conceivably work similarly to how Grand Theft Auto Online operates within Grand Theft Auto V. Either way, Gaudynights says a later visit revealed that the info had been removed from the website, making the story even more unverifiable than it already was.

More concrete but no less reliable is a second development, a recently discovered screenshot depicting a dilapidated shack set in a swampy field with the Red Dead Redemption logo in the bottom right corner. The image was posted to the Red Dead Redemption subreddit by user WColt with no description or context but which reportedly originated from an ex-Rockstar employee. Reddit user KDotMatrix commented on the post, providing some more insight into its potential validity.

“I’d note the chromatic aberration on the poles and other objects in the image, a small point of contention in GTA V.” KDotMatrix wrote. “Chromatic aberration has become increasingly prevalent in modern triple-A games as of late. Here’s a screenshot that shows the effect in the PC version of GTA V. This was also present on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.”

“Some people on GTA forums are saying that this could be a photo from the development of RDR, but chromatic aberration wasn’t present in the game, as it was running on an older version of the RAGE engine. Therefore, this most likely isn’t concept art from that time period.”

KDotMatrix claims the location in the image is similar to the Thieves’ Landing location from the first Red Dead Redemption which will be available in the new game if the recently leaked game map is to be believed. KDotMatrix also added an edit to his story after the fact with an unsourced claim that the image was “taken from an artist’s profile who f?ed up the permissions on his photos” according to a thread on the fansite GTA Forums.

Now we are at the point of obligatory clarification reminding readers that none of this is anywhere close to official confirmation. They could be intentional hoaxes, misunderstandings, or the simple byproduct of fans looking for new info. Still, the sheer frequency of Red Dead Redemption 2 leaks at this point makes a solid case for the game’s rumored reveal at this year’s E3.
