Titanfall beta drew in about 2 million players across PC and Xbox One

Posted on February 24, 2014 AT 11:06am

When Respawn Entertainment opened up the floodgates and turned the Titanfall invite-only beta into an open, public one, it drew in “around two million unique users” across PC and Xbox One.

“The designers spent a lot of time watching videos and streams of people playing to try to look and see how they were abusing things or not understanding things,” community manager Abbie Heppe told Polygon.

“We had around two million unique users playing during the beta,” she added.

Now, what makes this relevant—beyond pretty much confirming that Titanfall is truly going to be THe Next Big Thing—is that Respawn and Microsoft are going all-out to ensure Titanfall’s launch does not in any way mirror that of EA’s other recent first-person shooter release, Battlefield 4 (for which the multiplayer was plagued with server-related issues for months).

To that end, Microsoft will be hosting the Titanfall servers instead of EA.

“The most important thing for us on launch day is making sure that Microsoft’s Xbox Live compute platform can scale up as high as we need it to,” engineer Jon Shiring told Polygon in the same interview. “We had the alpha, but that was fairly small. Alpha proved that the tech works. Beta, the thing we wanted to test was what happens when you scale it really high, see what breaks and then fix that so we don’t have to find out on launch day.”

Said launch day is March 11 on Xbox One and Windows PC, March 25 on Xbox 360. Earlier today, a Titanfall Xbox One bundle was announced alongside a price drop for Microsoft’s new console in the U.K.
