To Have and Have Not… A Microphone

Posted on September 2, 2011 AT 12:00am

Ever since the announcement that Gearbox was working hard on Borderlands 2, an influx of screenshots and news has streamed in from many major gaming outlets. During a recent interview with Dan Ryckert of GameInformer, which focused on the co-op aspects of Borderlands 2, a question was raised in regards to the lack of boxing microphones in with PS3 units–as per Microsoft and the Xbox 360.

Ryckert asked Johnathon Hemingway and Paul Hellquist if they felt the decision by Sony to not include a “basic” microphone with their units in any way was hurting them. Hemingway and Hellquist had very similar and interesting responses.

Hemingway said, ”Absolutely. Absolutely. The thing that kills co-op gaming faster than anything else is not being able to communicate with my buddies. By definition, it’s supposed to be a shared experience. That means communication.

While Hellquist quipped, “One of the most heard things when we watched people play Borderlands is “Where are you?”. How are you supposed to do that when you don’t have a headset? You can’t even find each other, you have to pull out the maps and all that kind of stuff. The microphone is a big part of it for sure.

Sony’s emphasis on BlueTooth makes it more versatile in what kind of headset you use for the system, but the lack of inclusion of one when buying a new system is somewhat disappointing. It’ll be interesting to see if the recent price drops on their systems may lead to included headsets with new shipped units.
