More unnamed sources are coming out, saying that not only will Sony unveil (but not release) the PlayStation 4 next year, but that the PlayStation 3 will be getting a price drop in the not too distant future.
Today’s PS4 speculation comes from Industry Gamers, who say that they’ve heard from a “top developer” that Sony is “looking to unveil a PlayStation 4 sometime next year”. Rumors are swirling that Microsoft might show off the first hints of their next console next year; if they do, it isn’t hard to image that Sony wouldn’t want to be left out of the fun. Of course, this does not mean that the new consoles are coming this year, just that the first hints of them may be shown.
Along with this comes another rumor, this one from MCV: many are expecting Sony to announce a price cut for the PS3 this August at the Gamescom event. MCV says that while trade insiders are “hoping” for a price of 199.99, retailers are “prepared to go to 179.99.”
In terms of what a price drop could mean for those of us in the States, while an equal type of drop could mean a $249 price point, Sony has always kept the PS3 pricing in the U.S. after drops at equal levels, going $600 > $500 > $400 > $300. Would we be looking at a $249 PS3 if this price drop happens, or could we actually get a $199 PS3?
