The Laboratory is a new free game for Total War: Warhammer II that is “aimed squarely at those with powerful gaming PCs.”

The mode is “a Skaven-themed Custom Battle playground” that allows players to tweak 16 different settings to create insane battles, including unit sizes, gravity, ammunition, explosion size, and ability radius.

“While all players will be able to play in The Laboratory, it is entirely free of any minimum or recommended specification guidance,” developer Creative Assembly notes. “As a result, sliders that effect GPU or CPU performance can easily override your main performance settings unless you have a very high-powered PC. This can negatively impact your frame rate or likely cause gameplay behaviors you won’t see in the main game. This is intentional and very much the point of The Laboratory!”

The developer also addressed the reason for why normal battles are not like the ones in the trailer above, explaining that it would require the minimum and recommended requirements of the game to very high levels and require a complete rebalance and redesign of combat.

The Laboratory will be added to Total War: Warhammer II via a free update on December 14th.
